Alsace Bande Dessinée Association

The association

ABD stands for Alsace Bande Dessinée. The association -of legal type 1901- was created by a group of local enthusiasts who kept bumping into each other at comic-strip festivals and exhibitions.

The objectives of ABD are :

  • to meet and share ideas with other enthusiasts
  • to explore the history and future trends of comic-strip art with all those interested in the art-form (collectors, resellers, creators…)
  • the organisation of group events (day-trips, weekends…) research, meet-the-author, festivals….
  • the promotion of comic-strip art wherever and whenever possible

ABD aims to assemble people among whom the interests in the world of comic-strip are sufficiently eclectic that they may develop projects together that ensure the longevity of the association.

To this end the association has borne STRASBULLES, Strasbourg’s annual comic-strip festival, which has already become a major cultural event in Alsace.

So, if you share our passion for comic strip (la Bande Dessinée), if you want to share ideas, challenge your knowledge and live a new adventure, don’t hesitate to join us !

The Festival: A major event in the Alsatian cultural landscape

STRASBULLES is a European focused event where amateurs and professionals involved in all forms of the comic strip art-form meet. Enabling fans, first-timers, seasoned collectors, book experts and occasional readers to come together to share and celebrate their passion for the comic-strip art-form.

Strasbourg, being recognised as a creative centre of comic-strip production, makes STRASBULLES the ideal place to explore current artwork and writing trends of this ‘ninth’ art at the heart of Europe.

During the first Strasbourg Comic Strip Festival in 2008, six thousand visitors had the chance to meet with some seventy five authors and visit over forty exhibits and events in an exhibition space of over 1500m2. It was hailed by the press and by participants for its original style and high quality of events, on both national and European levels.

The 2009 event was even bigger and better, with a new 4000m2 space hosting festivities in mid-June.

Comic-strip is today a major art form which provokes growing interest from people of all generations and backgrounds. Franco-Belgian, Manga, American comic and graphic-novel comic-strips have played a part in our everyday lives for decades, appearing in the form of books, comics, cartoons and advertising.
